SCOG Wassail

We had a great wassail on January 6th with over 100 noisy wassailers. Let's hope that it produces a great apple harvest this autumn. The Rutland and Stamford Mercury gave us a double page spread of photos, but got a bit confused saying that " Brown’s Nursery, which folded in 1985, created 44 different varieties of cider." In fact records show that they sold 44 apple tree varieties, rather than cider, and the nursery moved to Oakham about 100 years earlier! Anyway you can hear more about the history of Stamford apples from our local apple historian, Sally Uttley, when she gives a talk on Wednesday, 18th July 7.30pm at the Crown Hotel meeting room. You can also see more about Brown's Nursery here
